Shah Rukh wraps up shoot for Vivek Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya

>> Friday, December 19, 2008

Vivek Vaswani is elated yet composed. His Dulha Mil Gaya has finally reached the finishing mark (well almost) with the biggest milestone being achieved i.e. portions featuring Shah Rukh Khan being wrapped up. No wonder, there is a renewed vigor in Vivek's voice as he announces the near-completion of his film."We have just finished principal shooting for the film after filming the last of the talkie portions and the climax. Only a song remains to be picturised and once Shah Rukh is back from Los Angeles in February, we would all come together again and take Dulha Mil Gaya to a close", says Vivek Vaswani whose association with Shah Rukh Khan dates back to Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman days. "Post 26/11, circumstances were so difficult for a film to be shot. Yet, it was because of Shah Rukh, Sushmita (Sen), Fardeen (Khan) and my entire crew who all came together to make it possible. They told me, 'Vivek, we will make it happen, you don't worry'. Everyone was completely supportive of Dulha Mil Gaya and didn't want any further delay in the film's shoot", Vivek gets emotional here. The song which remains to be picturised is a 'qawalli' that would be featuring Shah Rukh Khan along with Sushmita and Fardeen as well. "Meanwhile I will continue to utilize these couple of months that I have in hand. I have already sat on the film's edit for an entire last week and it is looking wonderful at it's 2.5 hours duration", informs Vivek while revealing his future plans, "Month of January would see some intense post production work happening. Everyone associated with Dulha Mil Gaya is supercharged and want to see it in theaters soon." So when would one see Dulha Mil Gaya hitting the screens? "I am looking at an April/May release though we also have to keep in mind the IPL. If the cricket mania strikes again during this time period, we may bring Dulha Mil Gaya a little later. Why to fiddle around with your product when you have painstakingly worked on practically each and every frame of your film? I am ready to wait for a couple of weeks extra rather than fool around with my film for an early release date", signs off Vivek.

Will 2008 mark triumph of common man on celluloid?

>> Sunday, December 14, 2008

New Delhi, Dec 7 (IANS) As year 2008 draws to a close, all eyes are now on an employee of a state electricity board to ignite the box-office, a fete that a mythological superhero, an anti-hero, and even a rock star failed to do so far. Come Dec 12, superstar Shah Rukh Khan will be seen as commoner Surinder Sahni who works for Punjab Power Board in "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi".
Going by the film’s tagline, it is a story of a common man who is happy in his mundane existence but undergoes an image makeover to win a small-time dance competition and the heart of his sweetheart.
Bollywood has been churning out mega-budget films with pioneering special effects in an attempt to make screen heroes all the more larger than life. “Drona”, “2050 Love Story”, “Kidnap”, “Yuvraaj” - all came and went but none left a lasting impact.
Though nearly all films are breaking even on account of the numerous revenue-making avenues, movie aficionados are still waiting for this year’s soul-stirring screen hero.
Akshay Kumar’s act as the bumbling Sikh-turned-goodhearted-don in “Singh Is Kinng” remains by far the most endearing act of the year and it is Shah Rukh’s turn to pull at audiences’ heartstrings.
“Rab Ne...”, slated for Friday release, is hoping to change that.
For its illustrious makers, the film’s grounding in a middle-to-lower middle class neighbourhood from the beginning to the end of the fable is a marked deviation from their usual fair.
Yash Raj Films has given some of Hindi cinema’s most remembered trendy, hip, well-heeled and cosmopolitan screen characters but seldom has it told the tale of a common man who regales in his humble means till the credits role.
Publicity for “Rab Ne...” has been largely curtailed in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai but the presence of King Khan, who is himself a symbol of the triumph of a middle-class boy-next-door coupled by the endearing music and promos, will hopefully get people back into cinema halls.
Shah Rukh says, “I truly believe that I bring hope to the middle class.”
With “Rab Ne...”, filmmaker Aditya Chopra has joined a growing number of believers who are reinventing the common man on the firmament of Hindi cinema.
Even as the Indian economy struggles to escape from getting sucked into the global meltdown and the traditionally chary and less flamboyant middle class is emerging as the dark horse, and advertisers, marketers and now filmmakers cannot ignore them, say trade observers.
The new wave of directors and filmmakers had figured this out long ago and Bollywood has been churning out a string of very refreshing movies that tell the tale of man on the street. The trend has pushed character actors who look nothing like the hero of yore into the centre-stage.
This week’s releases “Dil Kabaddi”, “Oh My God”, “Maharathi” and “Meerabai Not Out” are all helmed by directors and actors who would never have dreamt of a mainstream release till couple of years ago.
Most remarkably, Mumbai-based drama “Slumdog Millionaire” has been making waves in the US. The story of a slum dweller who wins the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” is winning at festival circuits and even drawing audiences beyond the traditional Bollywood fan base.
Remains to be seen if this story of a commoner can be the crossover film India has been pinning for.

Multiplexes have big expectations from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

>> Saturday, December 13, 2008

It's not even 24 hours since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi released across cinemas worldwide and the first set of positive reactions of the cinema owners from Mumbai have started to pour in about the film, the actor and the director. Bollywood Hungama got a few first hand reports after the first day first show from the men behind Cinemax, PVR and Fame.Mr. Devang of Cinemax who saw the film told us in a joyous tone, "Rab Ne... is a fantastic film. Once again, Adi and SRK have proved that they rule the box office. The film has got a repeat value and people are flocking to see the film especially in our red lounge where all shows are house full. It goes to show that SRK can change the seats and pull back the audience. We have also got a meet and greet SRK contest if you buy a combo meal pack and drop in your coupon in the drop box. Such offers usually attract a lot of attention. We expect a lot more crowd in the weekends which will be a good sight after what's happened lately". Mr. Joshi of PVR cinemas who loved the start and the end of the film informed, "There is increased security at the cinemas and it's nice to see audiences coming with their family to see this entertaining film with their favourite hero, Shah Rukh Khan. His magic has once again worked with Yash Raj Films. We have had a very strong opening in all our sites and expect a lot more in the days to come by a strong word of mouth". Our last comment came from Mr. Abhishek Raina of Fame who gave us an interesting point of view, "I feel the only reason that people are coming to the cinemas to watch Rab Ne… is because this is Shah Rukh's first film of 2008 and very few people seem to know that. Surely expectations are bound to double up. It's SRK in a never before seen role with a different look and a funny hairstyle. He has put the smile back on the faces of the people. Both Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan have packaged the film very well and because of a long gap till the next big film releases on December 25, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi seems to be a clear winner with more number of shows running at the multiplexes". With 'Rab' listening to the cinema owner's prayers 'haule haule', it's time that SRK, Adi and the rest of the cast and crew enjoy the positive outcome on the first day of their film's release.

Shah Rukh Khan speaks for the first time about the Mumbai tragedy

>> Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Shah Rukh Khan has spoken for the first time about his thoughts on the Mumbai atrocities. Speaking exclusively to Raj and Pablo for this Saturday's (6 December) 'Love Bollywood' Show on BBC Asian Network, Shah Rukh speaks openly about why he hasn't talked about the attacks till now as well as his views on what the younger generation of Muslims should be concentrating on.Shah Rukh said "I've tried to keep away from commenting on this as there are no words to express a situation like this because our feelings are mixed with anger, disbelief and sadness." In light of the horrific attacks, Shah Rukh went on to give his thoughts on religion and the younger Muslim generation. "Being Muslim myself, I believe youngsters need to understand Islam and respect the religion in the right way. It's such a huge waste and my appeal to all in these times and in recent years is that please can we run what we want in terms of politics, government, jobs and teaching our children with the prime motive of taking communalism out of it. I think no agenda should be attached to any kind of religion." Shah Rukh spoke passionately about his views on what he feels should be the only religion the nations' children should follow - 'work'; he goes on to say, "The religion our children are born with should be something they practice as a discipline and work should be developed as the new religion."

"SRK is a terrific producer" - Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan is extremely selective when it comes to films. "The script has to excite me. I should feel elated as I leave for the shoot every morning. In the past, I've accepted films that didn't excite me, but I took them up because they're vital for your career. Of course, I wouldn't like to name those films," Irrfan admits. So what was it about DIL KABADDI that got him charged? "My role. It's an extension of what I did in METRO. When I heard the script, I knew I had to do this role. It mirrors the life of a man living in a metropolis," pat comes the reply. Not many are aware that director Anil Senior had offered Irrfan the role that Rahul is now portraying in the film. "Rahul and I decided to swap roles," he smiles. But will the pairing with Soha Ali Khan work? "That's the beauty of this film. It's so unconventional. In fact, I'd go to the extent of saying that the chemistry is one of the USPs of this film," Irrfan says. Irrfan now looks forward to Priyadarshan's BILLOO BARBER and Jennifer Lynch's HISSS. How was it working with SRK in BILLOO BARBER? "Tremendous! I feel enriched. I always knew of him as a super-star, but he's an equally terrific producer. As an actor, he's just not insecure. I've started respecting him all the more," Irrfan's eyes glow as he talks of SRK. He's enjoying working with Jennifer Lynch too. "I've seen her films and was keen to work with her some day. HISSS is a different kind of a movie. Sure, it's about a snake woman [ichhadhaari nagin], but I bet, you haven't seen something like HISSS on the Indian screen before," he states confidently. Incidentally, Mallika Sherawat, who plays the role of a snake woman, has no dialogues in the film. All she does in the film is hiss!

The gold rush ends in Bollywood

The film industry, in the last two years, has witnessed exponential growth. In 2006, it was estimated to be worth US $1.8 billion and according to estimates was to grow to US $ 5.1 billion in 2011. The last five years also saw the entry and consolidation of corporate houses in the business. Flush with funds, top-billed stars and filmmakers could ask for the moon and get it. Tie-ups, mergers and acquisitions of unimaginable scale had become the norm-the recent Big Picture Entertainment investment in Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks for US $ 550 million being an example. With a financial crisis across the global bourses, has the film industry's dream run come to an end?Presently, Bollywood players claim that all is well with their world though insiders on condition of anonymity are willing to admit that things look set to change soon. Raising funds for projects will be more difficult as banks are facing a liquidity crisis. Companies that are listed on the London Stock Exchange and have IPOs have reportedly been impacted by the global financial crisis. According to reports in the pink papers, the shares of Indian companies have already gone down in value over the last year. The fallout is that companies will go back to being more selective about the films they make. Projects toplining blue-chip stars, heroes in particular such as Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan are likely to sail through but the pressure to bring in a higher return on investment is likely to increase. It bodes well for actors like SRK who have been consistent with their prices through both good and bad times. Likewise A -list directors are unlikely to face trouble but they will have to cut down the frills to keep projects cost-effective. Says Farrokh Balsara, Head, Media and Entertainment, Ernst & Young, "The current situation will bring in a reality check. There is likely to be a lot more discipline. A lot more planning if you will which could be as much as a year and a half as opposed to the present six months while the actual shooting may just last for two months. There is really no recession on the consumer end." Corporates, new entrants in particular, who were putting out unrealistic sums of money to attract stars, will have to innovate as funds from the markets are hard to come by. Expansion plans are likely to be on hold unless they have a direct bearing on the core business which is making films. Even as we go to print, the word is out on UTV World Movies and UTV Movies folding up operations in Delhi. They will now be consolidated within the Mumbai broadcasting operations. Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh also concurs that there would be weeding out among the current crop of players while Ramesh Sippy thinks that everybody is likely to be affected. Also, the money coming in from satellite rights etc (which was as much as Rs 10 crore) will be reallocated-producers will have to settle for more realistic prices. Television channels are no longer keen to acquire rights for films. Expenditure will be on the conservative side and stars will have to take a pay-cut with both films and endorsement deals. Balsara, however, reiterates that the income from new media is likely to grow as producers might want to better exploit non-traditional revenue sources. As is the home viewing segment which will find more takers. However, standalone producers and production banners which have thrived under far more harsh conditions in the absence of corporate funding will manage to tide over the crisis. Independent producers will tighten their belts and will opt for films that bring in audiences across the spectrum and not just the urban viewers. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala who counts among the few remaining standalone producers was of the opinion that the current phase is a "cleansing period" during which the crucial price corrections will take place. "There can never be a recession in the film industry," says Nadiadwala. In the face of the current adversity, it is a sentiment that the industry would like to hold on to.

Mumbai massacre leaves Bollywood stars numbed, outraged

>> Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Mumbai, There is a sense of shock, dismay and outrage among members of the film fraternity following the bloody terror strikes in Mumbai, India's entertainment and commercial capital. Though most of the stars have returned to work, they are not at ease as images of the massacre continue to haunt them.
Film shooting was sporadic Saturday, the day the terrorists who had held the city to ransom for almost 61 hours were flushed out. Bipasha Basu shot for a song with Ahmed Khan and Leena Bajaj shot with Amitabh Bachchan for "Teen Patti". Otherwise, all was quiet on the shooting front.US-based Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, who paid a tribute to the city with "Salaam Bombay", is unable to talk about it."I've no words at this moment. I pray for equanimity to prevail and that we don't give in to hysteria," Nair told IANS.Mira has stayed at the devastated Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, one of the three buildings the terrorists had seized, on her frequent visits to Mumbai. The attacks in Mumbai saw armed gunmen targetting 10 locations across the city, including two five-star hotels. The strikes that lasted three nights and two days, claimed at least 183 lives and left 239 injured.Naseeruddin Shah echoed Mira's sentiments and said: "What's the point in spouting clichés? Let's leave that to the politicians. My reaction of outrage and helplessness is no different from that of any sane person."Sushmita Sen, too, is wounded by the attack on Mumbai."The last couple of days have left me deeply hurt and angered. What's happening to our administration? We now see a basic disregard for human life. I've been praying constantly for all our children's future," said Sushmita.Preity Zinta, who returned from Dubai to a shell-shocked Mumbai, still can't believe what happened."I was stranded at the Dubai airport on Wednesday night. Innocent women and children being killed. What sense does it make? I've spent so many evenings at the Taj. I remember their hospitable staff with much warmth. Will the Taj ever be the same again?"My brother and his family came from the US to ring in my mother's birthday on Sunday. They couldn't have chosen a worst time to come to Mumbai. But it's good to have family with me at such a time," Preity said. She knew all the warm and hospitable staffers of the Taj and can't believe some of them are gone."Will the hotel ever be the same again? Even when it's re-opened, would we feel comfortable with the heavy security personnel and the memories of the violence?" Preity wondered.A majority of the Bollywood stars were in no mood to resume work, although the city seemed ready to bounce back.Said Suniel Shetty: "The city is in a state of shock. I'm getting to know gradually that I've lost friends in the attack whom I've known for years. This time it's not like other times. My family and I live quite close to both the Taj and Oberoi (Trident Hotel). We saw smoke and fire billowing out of these places where we've spent so many evenings."Suniel shot on Thursday for Priyadarshan's "De Dana Dan", but stayed home on Friday.Harman Baweja cancelled his shooting because he says he felt "angered and disillusioned".Sonu Sood cancelled his shooting in Hyderbad and said: "I've been under too much stress in the last four days. I guess I'll start shooting the day after."Vatsal Seth and Celina Jaitley chose to stay away from shooting to attend the funeral of their friend Ashish Chowdhary's sister Saturday. Ashish's mother and his sister's mother-in-law were inconsolably shattered. There were 10 bodies to be cremated along with Ashish's sister's and brother-in-law's.Will their lives ever be the same again?Lilette Dubey, who lives right next to the Taj, said Mumbai resembled a war zone in the three days. She left Mumbai Friday to be with her family in Delhi.Bollywood is in no mood to forgive, forget and move on. The latest SMS doing the rounds in Bollywood reads: "Let's start something. A non-cooperation movement. Something that can tell the politicians we aren't taking this lying down. That we want our safety. Let this movement be started by the corporates. A nameless, leaderless movement. Let's show them how many of us are angry, tired and frustrated. Let's all come together at the Gateway Of India Wednesday. Let's ask for what's our birthright. To live fearlessly."

'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' has simple, warm melodies (Music Review)

>> Sunday, November 30, 2008

Film: "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi"Music Composer: Salim-SuleimanLyricist: Jaideep SahniSingers: Sukhwinder Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Roop Kumar Rathod, Sonu Nigam, Labh Janjua, Sunidhi ChauhanRating: ***
Yash Raj Films has roped in composer duo Salim-Suleiman for "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" and they have churned out light, warm, romantic numbers for the movie. With a few exceptions, 'Rab Ne..." may not be your album of the year but could go on to be really popular."Dance Pe Chance" doesn't sound too exciting or dance-inducing courtesy the lack of fizz in the number. While the rendition by Sunidhi Chauhan is full of gusto and zeal, the music's pace is not good enough despite its rhythms and beats. Labh Janjua's Punjabi vocals add some zing to the track."Haule haule" turns things around for the album. Firstly, Sukhwinder proves his worth as a romantic singer. Secondly, it is a simple and soulful number and that is exactly where its beauty lies. The music has been kept really light and instruments have been kept to a minimum. Finally, Jaideep Sahni's lyrics are simply marvellous. Simple yet effective, the song is surely going to connect with music lovers."Phir milenge chalte chalte" is an interesting track as bits and pieces from yesteryears' music are imbibed and fused together. Salim and Suleiman not just bring in the old in this track but also use a lot of new and contemporary sounds.Melody and simplicity are once again the highlight of "Tujh mein dikhta". Yash Raj Films usually have this one melodramatic, soulful, romantic piece in every album of theirs and 'Tujh Mein...' fit the bill. It has been sung by Roop Kumar Rathod."Tujh mein dikhta" returns in a slower version where Shreya Ghoshal takes over the mike for a solo rendition. This one is also a pretty decent hear and audiences will like it over time."Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" is Salim-Suleiman's attempt at not composing an over-hyped album. It is short, sweet and may not completely bowl you over, but is sure to grow on listeners once the film releases. Jaideep Sahni deserves special mention for penning incredible and unconventional lyrics that should surely strike a chord with listeners.

Shahrukh Khan and Amir Khan in trouble.

>> Thursday, November 27, 2008

The buzz is that Shahrukh Khan and Amir Khan are facing the same problem.

Both are desperately waiting for their upcoming films ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Ghajini’. ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is directed by Aditya Chopra while ‘Ghajini’ is directed by A.R. MurugadossBoth the actors are having one of their career’s most awaited films ready for release. SRK’s film is releasing on 12th December while Ghajini is releasing on 25th December. Now at the same time both the actors are facing claims of falsification against them.

Writer Ajay Monga has accused Farah Khan and SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment of stealing his script idea for Om Shanti Om from his script. Now the case has taken an interesting turn with the Film Writers’ Association (FWA) going back on its earlier decision and claiming that it has found the first half of Om Shanti Om very similar to Monga’s script.

India’s Maths genius Shakuntala Devi has accused Aamir Khan of stealing her idea for his directorial debut film, Taare Zameen Par. Shakuntala has accused Aamir of borrowing ideas from her book. She now plans to produce her own film based on the story from which some of the things shown in Taare Zameen Par have been taken.

Although the case is still pending in the court, this development could be crucial in deciding the ultimate result of the case. Now it has to be seen how the two bollywood superstars are out from these cases. Source
