Shah Rukh wraps up shoot for Vivek Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya

>> Friday, December 19, 2008

Vivek Vaswani is elated yet composed. His Dulha Mil Gaya has finally reached the finishing mark (well almost) with the biggest milestone being achieved i.e. portions featuring Shah Rukh Khan being wrapped up. No wonder, there is a renewed vigor in Vivek's voice as he announces the near-completion of his film."We have just finished principal shooting for the film after filming the last of the talkie portions and the climax. Only a song remains to be picturised and once Shah Rukh is back from Los Angeles in February, we would all come together again and take Dulha Mil Gaya to a close", says Vivek Vaswani whose association with Shah Rukh Khan dates back to Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman days. "Post 26/11, circumstances were so difficult for a film to be shot. Yet, it was because of Shah Rukh, Sushmita (Sen), Fardeen (Khan) and my entire crew who all came together to make it possible. They told me, 'Vivek, we will make it happen, you don't worry'. Everyone was completely supportive of Dulha Mil Gaya and didn't want any further delay in the film's shoot", Vivek gets emotional here. The song which remains to be picturised is a 'qawalli' that would be featuring Shah Rukh Khan along with Sushmita and Fardeen as well. "Meanwhile I will continue to utilize these couple of months that I have in hand. I have already sat on the film's edit for an entire last week and it is looking wonderful at it's 2.5 hours duration", informs Vivek while revealing his future plans, "Month of January would see some intense post production work happening. Everyone associated with Dulha Mil Gaya is supercharged and want to see it in theaters soon." So when would one see Dulha Mil Gaya hitting the screens? "I am looking at an April/May release though we also have to keep in mind the IPL. If the cricket mania strikes again during this time period, we may bring Dulha Mil Gaya a little later. Why to fiddle around with your product when you have painstakingly worked on practically each and every frame of your film? I am ready to wait for a couple of weeks extra rather than fool around with my film for an early release date", signs off Vivek.

Will 2008 mark triumph of common man on celluloid?

>> Sunday, December 14, 2008

New Delhi, Dec 7 (IANS) As year 2008 draws to a close, all eyes are now on an employee of a state electricity board to ignite the box-office, a fete that a mythological superhero, an anti-hero, and even a rock star failed to do so far. Come Dec 12, superstar Shah Rukh Khan will be seen as commoner Surinder Sahni who works for Punjab Power Board in "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi".
Going by the film’s tagline, it is a story of a common man who is happy in his mundane existence but undergoes an image makeover to win a small-time dance competition and the heart of his sweetheart.
Bollywood has been churning out mega-budget films with pioneering special effects in an attempt to make screen heroes all the more larger than life. “Drona”, “2050 Love Story”, “Kidnap”, “Yuvraaj” - all came and went but none left a lasting impact.
Though nearly all films are breaking even on account of the numerous revenue-making avenues, movie aficionados are still waiting for this year’s soul-stirring screen hero.
Akshay Kumar’s act as the bumbling Sikh-turned-goodhearted-don in “Singh Is Kinng” remains by far the most endearing act of the year and it is Shah Rukh’s turn to pull at audiences’ heartstrings.
“Rab Ne...”, slated for Friday release, is hoping to change that.
For its illustrious makers, the film’s grounding in a middle-to-lower middle class neighbourhood from the beginning to the end of the fable is a marked deviation from their usual fair.
Yash Raj Films has given some of Hindi cinema’s most remembered trendy, hip, well-heeled and cosmopolitan screen characters but seldom has it told the tale of a common man who regales in his humble means till the credits role.
Publicity for “Rab Ne...” has been largely curtailed in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai but the presence of King Khan, who is himself a symbol of the triumph of a middle-class boy-next-door coupled by the endearing music and promos, will hopefully get people back into cinema halls.
Shah Rukh says, “I truly believe that I bring hope to the middle class.”
With “Rab Ne...”, filmmaker Aditya Chopra has joined a growing number of believers who are reinventing the common man on the firmament of Hindi cinema.
Even as the Indian economy struggles to escape from getting sucked into the global meltdown and the traditionally chary and less flamboyant middle class is emerging as the dark horse, and advertisers, marketers and now filmmakers cannot ignore them, say trade observers.
The new wave of directors and filmmakers had figured this out long ago and Bollywood has been churning out a string of very refreshing movies that tell the tale of man on the street. The trend has pushed character actors who look nothing like the hero of yore into the centre-stage.
This week’s releases “Dil Kabaddi”, “Oh My God”, “Maharathi” and “Meerabai Not Out” are all helmed by directors and actors who would never have dreamt of a mainstream release till couple of years ago.
Most remarkably, Mumbai-based drama “Slumdog Millionaire” has been making waves in the US. The story of a slum dweller who wins the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” is winning at festival circuits and even drawing audiences beyond the traditional Bollywood fan base.
Remains to be seen if this story of a commoner can be the crossover film India has been pinning for.

'Ghajini' to arrive earlier

Post 26/11, film business has been hit hard. Most cineplexes are running to negligible occupancy and in some instances, the management has been forced to call off shows due to lack of audiences. Perhaps this may've prompted people to assume that Aamir Khan's keenly anticipated GHAJINI, which is confirmed for Thursday, 25th December, might get pushed to the New Year. But it's not true!
On the contrary, GHAJINI producer Madhu Mantena says that the film will arrive earlier. Till now, the film was slated for release on Thursday, 25th December, but the makers have decided to release it on Wednesday, 24th December night. "We're organising paid previews across the country on Wednesday night, which means we're releasing GHAJINI a day earlier," Madhu tells me.
Sure, the release date of GHAJINI has been altered. It's Wednesday, not Thursday!

Chandni Chowk to China - Biggest Bollywood crossover flick?

Is Chandni Chowk to China the biggest film of an international scale that Bollywood has seen in the recent times? Will it be THE crossover film coming out of our country? If the theatrical promo of this Nikhil Advani directed film is any indication, this seems to be pretty much the case. Unveiled over the weekend gone by, the theatrical promo stuns from beginning till the end as it is truly grandiose and spectacular.
Says a source close to the film, "Nikhil (Advani) has gone all out in making sure that Chandni Chowk to China lives up to the mammoth expectations that people have from this Akshay Kumar starrer. The film is being pitched as a film that takes inspiration from Akshay's real life journey from being a chef to a superstar. Due to this the stakes are high and audience has to be presented with a truly grand affair that justifies the claims that have been made."
So what one gets is not just an ample dose of Akshay Kumar as he gets into the martial art act but also the kind of visuals that have been associated with Chinese classics such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
"The martial arts have to be seen to be believed. Also, a fortune has been spent on the special effects to make the film look world class. You have a look at the theatrical promo and you would get an idea for yourself that how spectacular the setting of the film has been. Also, what sets apart Chandni Chowk to China from any other routine masala flick is that it is not merely an action comedy but has a deeper storyline to it. There are some Chinese legends that have been unearthed in the film and Akshay Kumar unwittingly becomes a part of them", adds the source.
With Deepika Padukone in a double role and music, which seems all set to be a chartbuster, Chandni Chowk to China is all set to be the biggie which would change the fortunes of Bollywood as it enters into 2009.
